"Late Bloomer"

High school can often be the most influential period in a teenager's life.  Enduring friendships are formed and possible directions for the future are explored.  For some it is a time to shine, for others just four years to be gotten through.  And, of course, there are high schools attended by students with special talents, like music and art, or science and mathematics.  But what if there was a school that catered to those rarest of students--people with the talent to perform actual magic?

The fourteen original tales included in WITCH HIGH explore the challenges that students of the magical arts may face in a high school of their very own.  If you think chemistry is difficult, try studying alchemy.  If you ever fell victim to a school bully, how would you deal with a bully gifted with powerful magic?  If you ever wished for extra time to study for those exams, could the right spell give you all the time you could possibly need?

These are just a few of the magical adventures that will wait you when you enter SALEM TOWNSHIP PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL #4, a place where Harry Potter and his friends would feel right at home.

About the Book

Why Did I Write This Story

The minute I heard the title of this anthology, the story for “Late Bloomer” sprang into my head.  I hadn’t previously written a young adult story (well, except when I was one <g>), but I had a blast doing it.  Those tumultuous, emotional high school days came flooding back as I threw Abbi into the first scary days at high school.  I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Endorsements
"I recommend this book to any teen who likes a little fantasy and fun in their reading."
– Reading Angel, GoodReads
"had two favorite stories: Remedial Magic by Bill McCay and Late Bloomer by Karen Fox. Remedial Magic is about a Saranne, a young girl whose mother was sick and dying and how she tried to help save her mother's life. Late Bloomer is about Addi, a high schooler whose magic hadn't shown up yet and how the group she was welcomed into helped her find her magic. "
– A. Mason, So Many Books, So Little Time
"Pick up WITCH HIGH and you will find out what happens when a fire elemental likes someone who is interested in them back...sparks really do fly! Discover the creative punishment that is inflicted on a student who wreaks havoc on the school and has to pay back the guidance counselor in full. And see what sort of hidden magic a girl with seemingly no magical ability at all can grow. These are just three of the wonderful stories included in the book. I'd wave my wand over everyone and make them read this book as well, but alas, I truly have no special abilities. At least, none of mine have manifested yet!"

"I recommend this one to all teen paranormal readers. "

"Overall, this is a wonderful read for teens or adults--fun, touching, and delightful "
– Errant Dreams Reviews
"The fourteen contributions are all well written with the student talent being magic rather than science or math. Whether it is the cheerleaders using magic to prevent their pyramid from tumbling ("A Perfect Ten" by Christina F. York), the irony of the "Late Bloomer" by Karen Fox who would rather die than attend the school or Josie supervising the school cafeteria ("You Got Served" by Esther M. Friesner), the compilation is a fun lighthearted look at high school through a magical Potter like lens."

"14 stories that make up this truly delicious anthology. There is not a dud in the bunch, each deftly written with a keen ear and eye for the angst-ridden lives of the typical teenager in today's culture."
– PulpFiction Reviews
"...an absorbing anthology full of fourteen short stories that range from humorous to foreboding, and snarky to heart wrenching."

"I adored this book. ADORED, people. It's up there in my favorite short story books. There's not a boner in here. Some are particularly outstanding, but all are good fun to read. I highly recommend this one."
